London to Sydney in five hours

The flight on a commercial airliner currently takes about 23 hours. Imagine making the journey in about the same amount of time it takes to go from New York to LA? Alan Bond is a senior engineer for the LAPCAT (Long-Term Advanced Propulsion Concepts and Technologies) project and Managing Director of Reaction Engines Limited in Oxfordshire England LAPCAT was partially funded by The European Space Agency and the European Union. He says you’ll be able to do it in about four hours and forty-five minutes.

The plane is called the A2 (No relation to the Nazi’s A2 which was updated and later renamed V2 by Adolph Hitler) and should be ready for takeoff in about 15 years or 2023 according to Mr. Bond. The space travel will cost about $4000 but the downside is there will be no window seats.

The plane being designed so that it will be able to land on today’s commercial airlines landing strips but will cruise at 100,000 feet and reach speeds of Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound (Depending on temperature and pressure Mach 1 is about 700 miles per hour) The exhaust won’t harm the environment, as a matter of fact it might make you laugh since the plane employs a “green technology” burning liquid hydrogen. The result of the combustion is water vapor and nitrous oxide. We’ll keep you informed of this and other entertaining news.
