Benazir Bhutto Killing Linked to al-Qaida

The current Pakistani government said al-Qaida was behind the assassination offering a phone tap as proof, however the Pakistani Taliban in conflicting reports denies involvement.

Benazir Bhutto was the leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party. She was twice elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, and the first woman to be elected Prime Minister of a Muslim state. Her first placement was in 1988. Nearly two years later she was ordered out of office amidst allegations of corruption. She was elected again in 1993 and was once again removed in 1996 on like allegations, and went to Dubai in exile.

After an agreement with Presidenty Pervez Masharraf, granting amnesty on past charges, Benazir returned to Pakistan to run for office in 2007. Turmoil ensued. In October, her homecoming procession was attacked, resulting in the deaths of over 100 people and many more injured. On December 27, 2007, the second attack was successful.
