Atlas Shrugged is back on the production schedule for 2008 with Angelina Jolie slated to play the leading role of Dagny Taggart. In the fifty plus years since its completion, Atlas Shrugged has been rumored under production. Can this be another false hope?

Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged and might best be known for the book: The Fountainhead which was adapted into a screenplay starring Gary Cooper.

Atlas Shrugged, a stand alone novel, written in 1957, weaves a story of industrialist profit seekers pitted against government program administrators bend on taxing those profits to benefit the greater good of society -but as the Government grows stronger and more fascist, the successful leaders of industry begin to disappear.

Her books stress a philosophy that has been embraced and has notable follower-celebrities including Alan Greenspan who was once a part of her New York group “The Collective.” The basic premise of the philosophy is that mans greatest virtue is based upon self interest and reward; that in striving to fulfill this self interest, s/he acts as a valuable contributor to society. In short, it deifies man in rational selfishness.

For what it is worth, TheFutonPoncho votes Antonio Banderas for the part of  Francisco d’Anconia.
